Catch-up on Last Issue
In Basilisk #9, Regan and Hannah were recuperating at a hospital. Vanessa made her way back to the Chimera camp in the woods.
In This Issue of Basilisk #10
The opening scene of Basilisk #10 is disturbing. It looks like there’s two flashbacks that intertwine. Horror fans are going to geek-out about it. Having turned on Vanessa, Barret’s hunting down Regan. The Faithful attack the hospital, and Hannah goes full survivor mode to get out alive.
What Else Happens in this Comic?
There’s been a long running question about Hannah’s role with the Chimera. They always leave one survivor. Hannah was their first. Barret seems to know more than we the reader do and is following through on dreadful plans that are twisting around Hannah in unexpected ways.
The Comic's Themes
Can vengeance fill the hole left by the loss of loved ones? For ten issues, Hannah has been after the Chimera. With the help of the traitor Regan, she eliminated several of them but at great cost to herself. Despite the victories, Hannah doesn’t seem any closer to closure. In fact, she seems to be drifting further down the path of darkness. The evil of the Chimera is drawing her in and making Hannah an angel of dark vengeance or an unwilling servant.

How's Basilisk #10's Writing?
The Dialogue
Basilisk #10 has many scenes with the mysterious Barret. His words are laced with cryptic warnings and allusions to other events. His speech patterns are almost religious in nature. In the closing scene of the issue, take note how Barret is speaking to both Regan and Hannah at the same time.
Showing Versus Telling
We’re told that Regan used to be a monster. We’re shown that she helps Hannah again. Is Hannah a hero or the ultimate monster?
The Vibe
Maybe more than any issue of Basilisk, issue #10 comes across as a full-on horror movie. The opening scene is absolutely chilling. Hannah’s running around the hospital fighting the beat-up and cut-up Faithful is very close to a zombie movie.
Comic Art Review
Jonas Scharf’s artwork continues to wow with this issue. Lighting plays a big role in the artwork with heavy shadows, back-lighting, and scene lighting all shown through the inks.
As you look at the scenes with Vanessa, make a mental note about the style of dress the camp doctors and nurses are wearing. When is the last time you saw a hat like that? I’m hoping we’ll dig more into the Chimera camp in future issues. The attendants are creepy, and it comes across in their facial expressions.
On the Cover
Cover A is by series regular Jonas Scharf. Hannah is alone and out-gunned by the Faithful.
Cover B is by Ryan Sook and is the first of several alternate covers based on the Chimera’s faces. This month we have smell and a close-up of Cara’s face. I really like the design and ethereal feel of Ryan’s covers.
The Comic Panel by Panel
My favorite page in Basilisk #10 is page 18. Regan uses Manny’s power. We have a five panel page, but the panels are grouped into two sections. The bottom three panels work together to form a full image, direct the action, and clue us into both Regan and Hannah. The panels also flow into page 19 where you get the full extent of what Regan has been doing.
The colors by Alex Guimarães and letters by Ed Dukeshire are professionally done and complete the full package.
World Building
We have a two scene issue. Vanessa is still at the Chimera camp relearning its secrets. The Faithful attack Hannah at a hospital.

I Need More Content like Basilisk #10
If you need more Jonas Scharf artwork, he did the present day scenes in Marvel’s King in Black: Namor.
What was I missing?
I’m at the point in Basilisk where I want more answers than new questions. We’ve been dancing around what the Chimera is. It’s time to tell us.
