Catch-up on Last Issue
Last issue Jane had to contend with two overzealous SHIELD agents while her enemy Dario Agger was kidnapped at the meeting of the One Percent. See our recap of The Mighty Thor #8.
In This Issue of The Mighty Thor #9
Oubliette Midas and her ally Silver Samurai have kidnapped Dario Agger with the intent to rob Roxxon. Lady Thor and Agent Solomon intervene, and the villains have their moment to prove they are worthy adversaries for Thor. Samurai has some cool moves. Midas takes out some military while in the air. Thor lifts a mountain. She should be able to defeat these two with one hand.
What Else Happens in this Comic?
Agents Kurdel and Krill of SHIELD are still on the hunt for Lady Thor’s secret identity. They follow Jane’s trail to Asgardia and seek permission from Lord Cul to search Jane’s things. Cul’s thrilled to cause Jane Foster trouble.
How's The Mighty Thor #9's Writing?
The Dialogue
We get a nice bit of foreshadowing in the conversation between Lady Thor and Agent Solomon. Mjolnir did something new again this issue. Lady Thor wonders what else the war hammer can do (and we should too).
The dialogue between Midas and Samurai is wonderfully conversational. It’s like they’ve known each other for years, and we’ve stepped into a friendly conversation (about destroying the world).
Some of the pop-culture references like “Power Ranger and Sailor Moon” fell flat for me.
Showing Versus Telling
We have a lot of telling with the introductory scene in The Mighty Thor #9. Telling is a poor way to keep a story exciting. That said the Loki scene is so good, so filled with emotion, that Loki can tell us data points and story recap all day. Odin’s love for Freyja is unquestionable.
The Vibe
In The Mighty Thor #9, we have three genres coming together to give us something more than the individual parts. There’s a strong vibe of a heist movie with Midas and Samurai. We have the beginning of a world calamity movie with the Agger Imperative. We have a spy movie with the hi-jinx of all the SHIELD agents. To Jason Aaron’s credit, it works.
Comic Art Review
Russell Dauterman’s Asgarda designs are exquisite. The healer is ethereal yet medical. The interlocking triangles in the background are a nice touch.
Matt Wilson does a lot of painting with light in this issue of the Mighty Thor. Light from Silver Samurai’s sword, from Mjolnir, light from the control panels in the Roxxon base. All of these elements shine off the walls and the characters’ faces. In the scene between Midas and Agger, look at Agger’s eyes. The rage and fierceness of the character come through all with color. As usual for The Mighty Thor, we also have a lot of color special effects.
On the Cover
Cover A is by Russell Dauterman and showcases all of the major characters in this issue. Cover B by Aaron Kuder is Colossus from the X-men. Colossus isn’t in this issue of the Mighty Thor, and it’s a weird cover option. Did Marvel just have extra art or was there another huge event that needed pushing? It would have been great if Kuder had drawn a Loki and Freyja cover or a Lady Thor versus Colossus cover.
The Comic Panel by Panel
Joe Sabino’s best word balloon has to be the empty thought balloon from the Mindless Ones employed by Midas. Think about it. I laugh every time I read that scene. Actually, there may be a tie between that word balloon and the thunder noise as Lady Thor unleashes on Silver Samurai. The visual library of word balloons he’s built over the last nine issues is impressive. Silver Samurai’s pain sounds are fun to read too.
If you can pull yourself away from the Dauterman artwork, look at all the different types and shapes of panels he uses throughout the issue. I missed it in issue #8. Issue #9 of The Mighty Thor we have even more interesting uses of panels.
This is an art team that’s worked through the bugs of the Mighty Thor and can bring all of their strengths to the book.
World Building
We have some very impressive Roxxon technology on display in this issue. The space station was nifty. The secret base gives us shivers (pun intended). Asgardia is beautiful as always.

Who Will Like The Mighty Thor #9?
If you like Loki, this is his best scene yet. Fans of spy movies or SHIELD won’t want to miss The Mighty Thor #9.
I Need More Content like The Mighty Thor #9
I didn’t notice it with this month’s B Cover, but Aaron Kuder’s style is very reminiscent of Russell Dauterman — fine lines with rounded edges. If you’d like to judge for yourself, visit Aaron’s Twitter page.
Should You Buy This Comic Book?
Going into this issue, I wanted to see how Midas and Silver Samurai were going to be a threat to Lady Thor. They are impressive villains with skills sets that would give most Marvel super heroes trouble, but they weren't at Thor's level. They used circumstances and good planning to keep Lady Thor busy. We are in the middle of the arc. Pick up this issue so you have the details heading into the end.
