Catch-up on Last Issue

Last issue we wrapped up the first arc of the Mighty Thor. The Civil War on Asgardia came to close with Lady Freyja hurt. The Dark Council’s first strike into the Realm of the Light Elves was successful. Read our full review of The Mighty Thor #5.

In This Issue of The Mighty Thor #6

The Odinson makes his return to the Mighty Thor in a throwback tale spun by Loki to ensnare Dario Agger. Dario is feeling outmatched by his giant and magic-weilding allies. He’s looking for a solution, and Loki volunteers to help him.

What Else Happens in this Comic?

It’s a story-in-a-story set-up so our B-story has to be the Viking tale of Boldolf the Black who wished to acquire power, wine and women Viking style. He was good at it too, but his arrogance brought about his downfall.

The Comic's Themes

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it. Or beware arrogance. When it happens, the mighty have a long way to fall. Dario hears one part of the story, but, in his own arrogance, he doesn’t put the pieces together.

How's The Mighty Thor #6's Writing?

The Dialogue

As the first story of a multi-comic arc, we get a lot of set-up this issue. Many of the word balloons feel a little forced like “I need to deliver this line to set-up the next scene”. Once we get into Loki’s tale of ancient Midgard, our character’s voices fall in line. Ancient Thor is loud and angry. Ancient Loki is vile. Boldolf is… read the comic and decide for yourself.

Showing Versus Telling

I feel like there’s a lot of telling in this issue of The Mighty Thor #6. Some of it is due to having two stories happening at the same time. Both stories need equal time so both have a little less space to show us the action.

The Vibe

The story-in-a-story format is always fun. You know it’s going to pay off down the road. The questions are how will the two stories mingle and will it have been worth the wait.

Comic Art Review

In the next arc of the Mighty Thor, Marvel decided to split the art duties between Russell Dauterman and Raffa Garres. The art styles are very different. Russell is clean and fine lines. Raffa is thick and muddy colors. How the artists split the art duties works, but I’m not sure how fans of one artist will appreciate the other. I would have liked to see two similar artists paired together and allowed Matthew Wilson to use color to separate the story parts.

The Comic Panel by Panel

Of all of Russell’s Loki character designs, this one might be my favorite. Loki has a classic look; classic in the sense of Vikings not Marvel comics. Joe Sabino brought the special effects tool box out to play this issue. Whaaam, Thudd, Raaaagh!!! are just a few of high energy words helping to illustrate the story. Check out the colors on Bodolf’s story. Matthew Wilson adjusts the mood every few pages by changing the colors. When Bodolf loses faith, the colors change to muddy browns and greys. When he encounters the dragon, we have wonderfully bright orange and yellow.

World Building

We are shown the devastation Roxxon is creating as it mines Alfheim. There are a lot of muddy battlefields on Migard.

Who's In This Issue of The Mighty Thor #6

- Bodolf
- Thor
- Loki
- Dario Agger

The Big Question for Next Issue

We spent a lot of time learning about Bodolf. All that investment of time must lead us to something in the present.

Allow me, if you will, to tell you a story.

Loki to Dario

Who Will Like The Mighty Thor #6?

Fans of old school Loki, the evil Loki who helped you but mostly helped himself, will enjoy the classic tale in a tale. If you like Thor from the original Viking myths, you’ll also enjoy this issue. Except for the red hair, Thor is bigger than life just like those old stories.

I Need More Content like The Mighty Thor #6

If you are longing for more tales of old Asgard, check out the free LibriVox recording of In The Days of Giants. If you are new to norse mythology, be prepared for characters who are similar to the Marvel comics and Marvel movies like Thor: Love and Thunder, but one step removed. The characters tend to be more raw and stereotypical.

What was I missing?

We’ve seen this story before. No spoilers on the exact details, but I either really liked it or I’m bummed that it feels rehashed.

Should You Buy This Comic Book?

It's the start of a new arc, but I didn't enjoy the artwork combination. I like my Loki more grey jedi and less dark sith. Drunken Thor is not my cup of tea. Buy the trade so you can get the full story. Skip the floppy.
