Catch-up on Last Issue
Last issue Volstagg was present when the War of the Realms came to the dwarves. The fire demons attacked and destroyed a light elves refugee camp. Volstagg survived but was forever changed. His rage called to the Ultimate Mjolnir. Together they became the War Thor.
In This Issue of The Mighty Thor #21
Returning to Nidavellir, the War Thor brings the battle to the fire demons who are no match for the Bloodstorm. The Enchantress and King Ulik also try their hand at defeating Volstagg, the War Thor. They also fail miserably. Pushed forward by the Ultimate Mjolnir, Volstagg travels to the Ten Realms seeking vengeance for the death of the elf children.
What Else Happens in this Comic?
Jane is losing the battle against her cancer. Prince Thor wants to use Asgardian magic to heal her, but Jane refuses touching Mjolnir and flying to face the War Thor.
The Comic's Themes
Can rage be harnessed and focused into something good? Volstagg is consumed by rage over the death of the elf children. The Ultimate Mjolnir is an object of rage at the death of its entire universe. Together they could make a difference in the War of the Realms. Or they could make things much worse.
How's The Mighty Thor #21's Writing?
The Dialogue
After you absorb the awesomeness that issue #21 is, reread the dialogue between the fire demons. All of there life references are filtered through the lens of ‘fire’. Even their curse words are fire-based, “Sutur’s bones”, “my flaming”, “ice”, and “flameless”. In just a few pages, the fire demons are something real and practical.
Showing Versus Telling
Jason Aaron and Valerio Schiti show us the War Thor’s rage and anger. Twenty-four pages of unbridled destruction. Volstagg has fallen far so far that Agent Solomon doesn’t even recognize him.
The Vibe
The Mighty Thor #21 could only be a comic book. It’s has all the hallmarks of a comic with just a touch of darkness (War Thor’s rage). We get lots of action. The hero goes fisticuffs with our villains.
Comic Art Review
What I really enjoyed about Valerio Schiti’s art in The Mighty Thor #21 is all the panel breaking. He uses it to give emphasis to Mjolnir flying at its enemies. He also uses it to call out the War Thor. Capes flowing. Helmet wings breaking out of the panel. Facial expressions continue to be a strong point of the art. Just look at the hate in the War Thor’s eyes as he turns to the Fire Demons or the disbelief in the Enchantress’ face as the War Thor deflects her best blast.
On the Cover
Series regular, Russell Dauterman, draws the cover for The Mighty Thor #21. All three heroes in possession of the power of Thor are present, Prince Thor Odinson, Jane Foster and Volstagg. They are surrounded by fire demons. It’s great seeing the Thors together, but the cover has very little to do with the action inside.
The Comic Panel by Panel
I noticed this last issue too, Veronica Gandini colors the blacks on the fire goblins with a dark copper color. It lets them be in shadow, but still look on fire. We have a lot of lighting effects (based in color) with the Muspell fire, the War Thor’s lightning, Enchantress’ magic. Take special note of all the different background painting — storms, fire, outer space.
We also get now-classic Mighty Thor angled panels again this issue. They are used throughout the battle between War Thor and the Fire Demons. The triangle shapes imbues the page with energy as the chaos of battle rules the scene.

Who Will Like The Mighty Thor #21?
Enchantress fans. Alert. Buy this issue of The Mighty Thor. She doesn’t get enough scene time and the Enchantress is a delightful character.
I Need More Content like The Mighty Thor #21
Digging the artwork by Schiti and Gandini? They’ve become super stars at Marvel and DC Comics working on some of the biggest profile books. Valerio Schiti is currently working on Judgment Day, also stylized as A.X.E.: Judgment Day. Gandini is coloring Blood Syndicate and Deathstroke.
What was I missing?
There’s some history between Thunderstrike and the Enchantress that I don’t know. Thunderstrike was like Lady Thor and the War Thor. He wasn’t Prince Thor, but used the power of Thor (or Mjolnir) as a hero of Midgard.
Should You Buy This Comic Book?
We saw the War Thor cut loose against the forces of the Queen of Cinders this issue. Whoosh, he made short work of them. He also took on two heavy hitters in the form of the Enchantress and Ulik. It was all out action and a good issue overall. Buy it.
