How's Above the Clouds's Writing?
The Dialogue
This is the wonderful part. Headstrong and young Eily. Her equally headstrong mother. Eily’s sisters who have their eyes on the various warrior men. Transition to Wren, the caretaker, and her faithful sidekick Grannie Rata, the witch squirrel. Not to be forgotten is the abstract, always present Dragon.
Comic Art Review
This is the subtle part. Artist Melissa Pagluica has drawn two full worlds that interact with each other on the page. Each character is unique and easily identifiable. Various page layouts are just beautiful to behold.
To give you an idea of the strength of the artwork, in the real world, the story moves along without words. Melissa’s art carries the entire story with just facial expressions and character actions.
The fantasy world is equal parts ethereal and solid flowing like the words of a novel.
Like the greatest comic artists, the panels are deep, almost three dimensional. There’s activity happening in the foreground, the middle ground and the background.
